Decimal is everyday numbers; hex and binary are common in code (addresses, masks, flags); octal appears in some file permissions and legacy systems.

Use * for multiplication (e.g. 2*x). Powers use ^ (e.g. x^2). Functions include sin, cos, tan, sqrt, abs, log, exp.
Linear functions change at a constant rate, so their graphs are straight lines (except vertical lines, which are not functions of x in y = f(x) form). Plotting several lines together makes it easy to compare steepness and crossing points.
Use the calculator to experiment with different slopes and intercepts. Try positive versus negative slopes, and lines that pass through the origin versus those shifted up or down.

A non-vertical line can be written y = m*x + b. The coefficient m is the slope; b is the y-intercept.
Pick two points on the line and compute (change in y) / (change in x). For y = m*x + b, the value m is that ratio everywhere along the line.
This tool plots y as a function of x. Vertical lines are x = constant and are not expressible as y = f(x). Use a parametric or implicit plotter for those cases.
